JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Ensure effective financial reporting, management and control of Australian Unity’s fixed assets.
  • 5 month fixed-term contract with strong view to extension.
  • We’re for Real Wellbeing.

Join us and let’s make a bigger difference together.

Established in 1840, we’re Australia’s first member-owned wellbeing company, delivering health, wealth and care services to more than 700,000 Australians. Today, while we’ve grown to a company of over 7000 employees, our focus remains the same as it was 180 years ago — to deliver Real Wellbeing for our customers, members and the community.

It’s an exciting time to be joining Australian Unity — we’re a growing organisation, focused on finding opportunities to create social and community value while operating with commercial purpose. Australian Unity is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.

The Role

In this newly created role as Fixed Assets Accountant in our Finance and Strategy function, you will play a critical part in ensuring effective financial reporting, management and control of Australian Unity’s fixed assets. This role will span across the organization and will work collaboratively with Financial Control, Tax and Commercial Finance teams. Your initial focus in this role will be to undertake a review of the existing fixed asset process including a deep dive into the accounting and tax fixed asset registers to identify focus areas for improvements to ensure best practice fixed asset controls are in place.

Reporting to the GM – Commercial Strategy & Finance, key responsibilities will include:

  • Perform a detailed review and analysis of all individual assets capitalised, confirming that appropriate depreciation rates have been used for book and tax in respect of all asset categories.
  • Perform a detailed review and analysis of capital spend expensed directly to the P&L to ensure correct treatment has been applied for tax purposes.
  • Design a process to capture and track assets that are eligible under the new temporary full expensing (instant asset write-off) measures introduced in the Federal Budget in October 2020.
  • Undertake a review of current fixed asset processes and implement process improvements and controls where risks have been identified, including but not limited to:
    • new fixed asset additions, including project capitalisation;
    • asset disposals, transfers and/or write-offs.
  • Perform a review of the fixed asset policy, make recommendations for improvements and implement where changes are identified.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • CA/CPA qualification coupled with relevant accounting experience ideally in a large and complex organisation.
  • Proven experience within a financial role with a fixed-assets focus is essential.
  • Demonstrated experience with financial controls and systems.
  • Competent Excel skills and computer literacy across financial software and accounting packages (e.g. TM1, SUN, Professional Advantage & Blackline).
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with proven ability to cultivate productive and effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work methodically and autonomously with strong attention to detail.
